labor amoris

yesterday night sean, stan, tarun, clara, qian and i attended the labor amoris classical guitar concert at the performingarts centre. truly an enriching perfrmance. it's good to listen to something softer once in a while, just like how i can't live on rock my entire life. depending on moods, i decided to pause my hectic, fast-paced lifestyle for once. i'm glad i made the right decision.

we (sean and i) got to school like how we frequently do, by a bike. i think we have been to school in a bike four times already. it was no different this time. but some things did get on my nerves. well apparently i had actually dressed up for this occasion, complete with wax, cologne and all ; but a trip to sean's place through the shortcuts in bishan park proved to be a bad idea. having a full mountain bike with gears and suspensions rented from jonathan for a while, i decided to get off the beaten path and onto the grass. maybe it wasn't such a great thought as the rain had just poured a few hours before and the grass was ridiculously muddy. having a bike with no mud-guards, you can guess what happened next--my beautiful white clothing became spotted with brown patches of God-knows-what. i cursed at the blooming puddle and hoped it would dry soon. it did, after a few hours, but they still looked quite bad. what a journey. the price to pay.

about one and a half hours later we met yvonne at far east flora. we had trouble finding the right flowers, especially roses which were yvonne's idea. they didn't even sell them in stalks. so we left with a big bunch of yellow ones. for me, well, i couldnt particularly describe the flowers i bought but they looked like daisies. or dandelions. i don't know. but as long as they looked nice, had no bugs in them, were REAL ones, had no thorns and were not meant for dead people, i got them. and so we were on the way to school, with two bikes heading for the main gate on the highway at full-throttled 35km/h. the time was 7.15pm. the concert was destined to begin at 7.30. pulling a full 90-degree drift/powerslide into the school gate and working the gears up the slope just like 'the fast and the furious', we made it there at 7.20pm. just nice to cool off.

the concert began almost immediately, and we all calmed down. classical guitar is classified as mellow, and it was exactly that. i couldn't help but snigger at the singer though. well he ain't exactly singapore idol material, but nonetheless i shall just keep my mouth shut since i highly doubt i can sing better than him. and most of the time i was concentrating on the sound of the guitars instead.

apparently carys didn't really appear for many songs, but when she did they sounded really nice. yes. quite a bit of pop here and there, some bossa nova, a bit of samba...all the classical guitar works. although a single guitar may not sound as desirable, you get a remarkable tune when you put the entire lot of them together. and that's why they sounded good. i have to congratulate carys for her efforts, as every single guitarist plays a part in making the music sound nice, and she is no exception. neither is is easy to overcome the slight fear you get from sitting in front of a huge crowd. i have to applaud her for that.

the bad thing was that yvonne couldn't make it for the concert ; she had some family affairs to attend to. sigh.

right after the concert we gave the flowers to her at backstage. it was our only way of showing our appreciation, other than the thunderous applause and whistles after each song. i wonder how it felt for her to receive such flowers.i haven't personally had such a glimpse from the stage. but what i know is that the stage is going o become my home soon. i love the stage. and i haven't had any stage fright so far so i guess it's a good start.

well, seeing such a calm and therapeutic performance bringing such response from the crowd, i can say it has only increased my urge to get up there as well. the audience were enthusiastic, providing the missing beats with a series of hand-claps. i can't imagine the tremendous amount of satisfaction you get hearing the audience enjoying your music. next year, by hook or by crook, i'm going up for the CJC Rockafellaskank '07 concert. we're going to hit it hard and do it fast. especially the likes of songs with a catchy beat. i don't care if we don't win the competition, as long as we go have fun and the crowd has a response we'll be more than happy.

well, enough said. i shall add some photos from the concert. and once again, for the wonderful performance and effort put in, congratulations carys!
