the evening was another perfect one where everything was just in control. the sun had its signature setting as usual. but what made it even better was the shower i had.
well, the showers in the kelong aren't exactly eye-for-eye to most people, but i did take a valuable interest in the design and layout of it. it was constructed entirely out of wood--walls, floors and ceiling (the toilet bowl cannot be made from wood, obviously). each cubicle had a small grille for a window, a bowl and a shower head stuck to the wall. the shower wasn't much adjustable, and it didn't come with a heater either. but on this day, the shower seemed like one of the best i've ever had. my cell was playing Electrico's 'Runaway' in the far corner of the cubicle and the warm sunlight was shining through the grille. i could actually look at the sun directly cos most of it had dimmed ; it was bright enough to light up the surroundings with a golden glow but dim enough to not fry your retinas. it was breath-taking and i believe i spent 20 min in the shower just enjoying the moment (there wasn't a queue for your information, i'm not that bad).

our night trekking was scheduled to take place on the last night, which ain't too bad. but it was messier than i thought. we took a small hike up this hill which took only about ten minutes (it was pitch dark so we needed our torches) and then descended to the beach, where we were attacked by countless sandflies. before long, we hit the rocky coast off one part of the island we've never been to before. for a few km, the terrain consisted of nothing more than rocks and sea snails. there were so many i swear we may have killed an entire generation during that trek. we were hoping that we'd reach the sandbar back in time, not get lost in the most slippery, most uneven area of the island. after about an hour we managed to get back, catching the glowing sand of the sandbar on the way back.
the trekking sapped so much of our energy that we didn't really keep awake long enough for the next activity, which was the building of bubu traps. they were meant to catch fish who were stupid enough not to learn how to u-turn (that's actually quite a lot), and were built from scratch using a few sturdy wooden sticks and a huge wire mesh. we did quite a bit of sawing and hammering to produce the 2m-long trap, which i have no idea whether it would be used in the near future. but we did a satisfactory job nonetheless.

being the last night, we were allowed to stay up the entire night without a curfew. it also happened to be the night of meteor showers, which would take place at 2am. true enough, i saw two white streaks across the starry night sky, which is so goddamn beautiful i can't use proper words to describe. in fact, we decided to take our pillows and blankets all the way out into the jetty so we could lie under the stars to watch the showers. there weretwo showers every hour but after the first two i couldn't stay awake anymore and fell asleep on the jetty in the cold moon and sea breeze. it was the best night there.
